Insomniac are making a game based on Marvel’s Wolverine!

The Insomniac games logo has just popped up on in the PlayStation Showcase so that means Spider-Man 2, right? Well, yes, but also no. They’re only making a frickin’ game based on Marvel’s Wolverine!

What’s really interesting is who is making the game. Where Spider-Man 2 is being led by the creative and game director that led that original game, Marvel’s Wolverine is being directed by Brian Horton (creative director) and Cameron Christian (game director), who were in charge of Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Development is still at a very early stage on this one, so while Spider-Man 2 has been dated for 2023, Wolverine could be even further away from release.

A game based on the clawed anti was rumoured to be in production in March last year but as the leak came from notorious site 4chan no one paid much attention to it. The leak suggested Marvel’s Wolverine was not a vast open world game like Spider-Man: Miles Morales, but more like God of War with open sections for exploration but a mostly linear path.

Back in June Insomniac announced that it was hiring for a multiplayer game with melee based combat. The job listing also asked for a “thorough understanding of melee combat systems, enemy design and boss design.”

The same rumour also suggested that a Daredevil game was also in the works, but this would be multi format set in “modern-day Chicago” with a “noir-style detective game” vibe. The map oif the game is said bt “65 square miles” that would be more than three times the size of the play area of Spider-Man.

There’s a lot of Marvel coming to consoles, the PlayStation Showcase also had a new trailer for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

Eidos Montreal has revealed more about the soundtrack for the upcoming Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy game. As with the Marvel movies, there will of course be a selection of 80s classics incorporated in the game, but the studio is also combining this with an orchestral score and an original rock album that’s been created just for the game.

In a new developer video, Steve Szczepkowski, Senior Audio Director at Eidos-Montréal explained how they’ve combined the three and derived gameplay from the music.

Szczepkowski says: “Music is intrinsic to the Guardians’ franchise, and we wanted to make it focal to the gameplay experience. The soundtrack is infused in the DNA of the game, and our use of it goes far beyond usual expectations. Whether it’s powering up combat in the Huddle or bringing Star-Lord’s favourite band to life, every element was carefully woven into the lore to enhance the story of this rock and roll band of misfits.”

The licensed music draws from a wide range of bands, including Iron Maiden, KISS, New Kids On The Block, Rick Astley and Hot Chocolate, and it’s these tracks that will tie in with the Huddle found in the game’s combat. Here you can hit play on Star-Lord’s Cassette Player to play one of the licensed track and inspire the Guardians while fighting.
