Intel Unveils Next-Gen Thunderbolt Featured With USB4 v2 and DisplayPort 2.1

Thunderbolt

In an official press release, Intel confirmed that its next-generation Thunderbolt interface is built on USB4 version 2.0 and will offer up to 80Gbps of bidirectional bandwidth. Currently, data travels across four lanes of 40 Gbps each. This new version should allow high-resolution displays and external GPUs to communicate with one another.

The next-gen Thunderbolt connector will support twice the data rate than USB4 and will also be compatible with DisplayPort 2.1. The increased bandwidth is possible because the PHY uses PAM3 signal encoding that transmits three bits of data per clock cycle. In addition, it will support existing passive cables up to 1 meter in length.

Thunderbolt is becoming more common, and Intel has announced new models that support the new connector. It is capable of 40 Gbps of data and can be configured as a branching hub. The connector also supports DP1.4, USB 3 (10G), and PCIe (32G) connections. And it will be compatible with most devices in the market, as long as the host device is Thunderbolt compatible.

The new Thunderbolt 4 connection will be a huge step forward for the industry. The new connection standard has the potential to provide an entirely new experience for PCs and other devices. The new port is also compatible with two 4K displays and one 8K display. In addition to this, Thunderbolt 4 will support PC charging on at least one computer port.
