The future is here, or at least it is currently being heralded in by Japanese company SkyDrive. This group has the unique ambition of bringing flying cars out of the realm of science fiction and into the realm of reality, and now it has come one step closer to reaching that goal thanks to a successful manned test drive in the Toyota Test Field.

This flying car is the smallest vertical take off and landing vehicle ever created, taking up space equal to about two parked cars. What’s more, the vehicle is fully electric, meaning no fossil fuels are needed for its operation. If this test drive has forward looking readers excited, it should, as SkyDrive has some pretty bold goals for the future.

Rather than creating a flying car as a luxury device available only to the upper echelons of society, SkyDrive envisions a future in which the sky is full of flying cars owned by everyday consumers. That vision is no doubt many years away, but it may be closer than most anticipated, as the flying car that was tested recently, the SD-03, is scheduled for release in 2023.

Of course, there is still a lot of work to do before a flying car is released to the public. On SkyDrive’s end, there are many safety standards it will need to meet first, and governments will need to establish laws for consumer-based aerial travel as well, but it is good to see progress being made. Those wanting to see the test drive can watch the video of the SD-03 circling the field with a human driver in it.
