Kratos VA Will Voice Black Panther In Marvel’s Avengers War For Wakanda

We still don’t have a specific release date for War for Wakanda, the upcoming story expansion for Marvel’s Avengers, but we are at least starting to get some idea of what to expect in the coming DLC.

E3's trailer showed us King T'Challa, better known as the Black Panther, taking on Ulysses Klaw in his signature Vibranium suit, but the voice of T'Challa was left a mystery that hasn't been solved until today.

In an interview with EW, Chris Judge, best known for his role as the voice of Kratos, revealed that he will be the voice of King T'Challa in the upcoming expansion. And it turns out he was quite reluctant to take on the role.

"I turned it down straight away," Judge said when asked how he responded to the offer. "There's many Black Panthers, but I really didn't believe that anyone should ever do T'Challa again [after Boseman]. The actual talks proceeded and, basically, I wound up doing it because my mother and my children said if I didn't do it, they would disown me."

Chadwick Boseman, the famous actor who first played Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, died almost a year ago of colon cancer, a condition which he hid from the public. The sudden death struck everyone hard, but it also left a big vacancy that anyone would be nervous about filling. Even Kratos.

"To be quite honest, I was fearful of being compared to what Chadwick had so wonderfully done," Judge added. "The only way I could really wrap my head around it was to not even attempt a voice match, to let my performance stand on its own. I put all that into it and hopefully people like it."

Judge worked with Boseman's dialect coach to get the distinctive Wakandan accent down, but Judge's Black Panther is seen as distinct and separate from the movies. He's an older, wiser king who's been defending his realm for some time. We'll be able to see how well he's doing in War for Wakanda, out next month for Marvel's Avengers.
