In one of the weirder bits during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2021, Geoff Keighley revealed that IGN would be getting an exclusive trailer for Lost Judgment, the upcoming sequel to 2018's Judgment. Quickly whisking away from that, it was another few hours before IGN posted the trailer to social media, which we now have in front of us. It certainly was worth the wait, because this story looks like a massive departure from the sometimes serious, but never too lethal stories from Yakuza.
Taking place a few years after the original game, Yagami Takayuki is given a lead on a case that is unfolding in Ijincho, Yokohama (the setting from Yakuza: Like a Dragon). The cops have discovered a body after responding to an arson call and it turns out a recent trial back in Kamurocho is inexplicably linked. One man wants revenge for the death of his son, though maybe he isn't necessarily the one who should be on trial here.
There are snippets of dialogue from previous trailers we've seen, but this longer cut reveals some twisted sights. If you don't like the look of decomposing bodies (and who does?), you should probably steer clear. In fact, you may want to avoid this trailer if you'd like to go in spoiler-free, though there doesn't seem to be too many revelations in here.

If you're wondering whether or not you'll need to play the first Judgment before this one, it doesn't seem likely. Much like with the Yakuza games, Lost Judgment appears to be a standalone story that features Yagami rather than follows up on his past exploits. There are bound to be references you'll miss and you certainly won't understand why he's hanging around with Sugiura and Higashi, but that's just background for what is otherwise an independent adventure.
As we've reported previously, Lost Judgment will be releasing on September 24, 2021, on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. A free next-gen upgrade will be available for those that grab the last-gen port. GameStop will have an exclusive steelbook case for pre-orders and Lost Judgment will be the first game by developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios to have a season pass.
