Mario Kart 8 Deluxe And GTA 5 Top This Week’s Boxed Chart

The top three entries in last week's UK boxed chart were all games that were previously released on older generations of consoles.

The summer can be pretty slow going for new games. Most launches are gathered around E3 and the new titles announced during that weekend make the calendar feel even busier than it actually is. All of that makes what is a typically dry spell for new games feel even dryer, hence how the UK boxed chart looks this week.

F1 2021 enjoyed three weeks at the top of the chart after dethroning The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD. However, the hype surrounding both those new games has now worn off, and titles that have never experienced a lack of hype have returned to the top spots. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, a souped-up version of a Wii U game that hit Nintendo Switch in 2017, is back at number one.

The rest of the top three is also made up of games that have been available for a very long time. GTA 5, which has been on the market in various forms for almost eight years, and Minecraft which originally launched almost a decade ago. All three titles have been mainstays in the top ten since they launched. However, a lack of new releases has allowed them to shimmy all the way back to the top of the pile.

There is evidence in the top ten that we aren't just looking at a chart from four years ago. Hades, which officially arrived on PlayStation and Xbox last week, is in at number eight. Interestingly, 7% of its physical sales in the UK were on Xbox even though Hades can be played through Game Pass for free right now. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart also re-enters the top ren thanks to a new batch of PS5s finding its way to the UK.

Elsewhere, the official Olympics Game continues to perform well even though the real games have come to an end. Other PS5 games such as Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Resident Evil Village also experienced boosts in sales thanks to the influx of PS5s.
