Marvel Studios knocked it out of the ballpark with the release of its latest Disney+ series What If…? This series tells stories using familiar faces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe while putting them in never-before-seen situations.
Storylines that fans have been privy to, so far, have involved heavy action sequences, major betrayal, and Earth-shattering heartbreak. Marvel has put forth storylines involving the uprise of Peggy Carter, whose character was voiced by the original Captain America: The First Avenger actor Hayley Atwell, and the devastating destruction of Dr. Strange (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) as he avoids injuring his hands in his infamous car crash, and instead losses something much more important.

With four episodes down and only nine more to go, fans have been standing by to see which storylines are coming next. Marvel Studios threw them a lifeline, sharing a few heavy clues for the upcoming episode.
The production company tweeted, "Assemble the undead Zombies awaken in the fifth episode of Marvel Studios' #WhatIf, streaming Wednesday on @DisneyPlus." Accompanying the tell-all caption were images of Captain America and Hawkeye as zombies.
While the storyline was already teased in the What If..? official trailer, many were shocked that it is slated to drop next. Some fans took to the comments to argue that the episode was originally supposed to premiere further down the line, as the seventh episode in the series. Others were disappointed that a Thor-centric episode wasn't coming next.
This storyline originally arose from a five-issue comic book series called Marvel Zombies which was first published in 2005. It came from the minds of The Walking Dead's Robert Kirkman and artist Sean Phillips. Five more issues were published in 2007 in a run called Marvel Zombies 2. This idea sparked inspiration for many as additional one-offs and spin-offs followed.
In this universe, the Avengers still have their signature personality traits and powers while in zombie-form. They just additionally crave human flesh which conflicts dramatically with their overall purpose to defend the Earth and its inhabitants from imminent threats.
Speculating about the new episode, it is apparent that the suits seen in the two posters are nearly identical to the suits worn in Captain America: Civil War. It has been thought that the altered action in the What If..? timeline will involve Crossbones successfully getting his hands on the biological weapon during the battle in Lagos, thus releasing it and spreading a virus that causes the zombie apocalypse.
Episode 5 of What If…? premieres September 8 on Disney Plus.
