Marvel’s Avengers has recently acquired some new microtransactions, and these seem to fly in the face of what Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix stated to fans prior to the game’s release. Before Marvel’s Avengers was released, Crystal Dynamics stated that all microtransactions would be for aesthetics only, but now the store has been stocked with XP boost content that can be bought by using real world cash. Below, you can see the statement from 28th August 2020, where the cosmetic only approach for microtransactions was explicitly made.
“We’ve also committed that content purchasable with real money in Marvel’s Avengers will be aesthetic-only additions, which will ensure we can keep the game fresh for years to come. The fight against AIM is only just beginning, there is much more story and many more heroes on the horizon. Our in-game economy is built on a player-first approach where you can earn outfits, emotes, nameplates, and amazing gear through play, as well as tailor your style with store cosmetics purchased using Credits obtained by exchanging real-world currency.”
The store update for these new Hero’s Catalysts and Fragment Extractors consumables was noted in the weekly War Table blog, with a small paragraph saying: “We added a Consumable category in the Marketplace where you can purchase Hero’s Catalysts and Fragment Extractors. You can purchase a consumable with a one-day duration for 100 Credits, a three-day duration for 250 Credits, or seven-day duration for 500 Credits.”
No further clarifications have currently be made. The reason as to why consumables have been added could be for a couple of reasons, though none of this is confirmed. First Marvel’s Avengers was a major financial loss for Square Enix, with company having to write off 11 billion yen, which at the time amounted to approximately $105 million or £80 million. Additionally, Marvel’s Avengers was added to Xbox Game Pass last week which meant a potential influx of new players, and it could be that Square Enix is trying to recoup some of those losses from new players so they can catch up to those who have been playing for a lot longer.
