Marvel’s Midnight Suns New Gameplay Shows Wolverine, Blade, And Doctor Strange In Action

Firaxis showed off a new gameplay demo for tactical RPG Marvel’s Midnight Suns, featuring iconic superheroes such as Wolverine, Blade, and Doctor Strange in combat.

During the first developer livestream, creative director Jake Solomon and franchise producer Garth DeAngelis offered an in-depth look at some extended gameplay footage for Midnight Suns alpha. Playing as Hunter — a fully customizable original character – you can take the other two superheroes on the missions via portals to limbo.

The game will have a central hub called the Abbey, where Hunter can talk to squadmates, change clothes, customize living quarters, walk around with their demonic hellhound Charlie, and do other fun stuff. There's a lot of different mechanics at play, however, you won’t be able to romance your fellow heroes between missions.

When it comes to action, despite being a turn-based tactical game, Midnight Suns will offer plenty of spectacular superhero action full of combos, explosions, and destruction chaos.

Each hero can use three different types of abilities: attacks (deal damage), skills (grants buffs and special effects), and heroic moves (and combos). To use the latter, first you need to accumulate points of heroism — a special resource, granting by using basic abilities. If you already feel a little confused, fear not — the creators said there aren’t that many abilities in Midnight Suns. In time, you’ll learn your way around each skill and will know exactly what each card does.

In the footage, Hunter and Wolverine faced a strong boss, Sabretooth, who required some coordination and planning to take down. The boss has stun and bind resistance, so you must act creatively. To beat him, Wolverine utilized the surroundings in combat to deal additional damage and even used a leap-off attack to jump on Sabretooth from above.

The devs stressed that they have already been listening to fan feedback, as it’s very important for the team to clearly communicate about what Midnight Suns truly is. Apparently, some players were quickly scared off by the card-based combat system, therefore the franchise producer emphasized that the upcoming tactical RPG is a premium title that is brimming with content and won’t have any gameplay-related microtransactions. Let’s hope more people will hear that before the game launches in March 2022.
