Monster Hunter Stories 2 Sells 1 Million Copies

Looks like fans can’t get enough of the Monster Hunter series. Capcom has announced that the recently released Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin has shipped 1 million units. That number, which represents the global units sold of the RPG for Nintendo Switch and PC, is pretty impressive considering the game has been out less than a month.

Since the launch of the original Monster Hunter back in 2004, the series has spawned several sequels and spin-offs, including the Monster Hunter Stories series. Unlike the original where monsters are hunted and scavenged for armor and weapons, Stories sees players befriending the monsters they encounter and learning to use them as mounts to ride into battle with. Plus, the Stories series opted for a turn-based combat system as opposed to the massive multiplayer format of the originals.

With Wings of Ruin, players take control of the grandson/granddaughter of a legendary Rider as they meet up with a Wyverian in charge of a mysterious egg that will hatch into a Rathalos. The game has been praised for being a solid JRPG and likened to other classic JRPG’s like Pokémon. In our review of the title, we called it a “wondrous little adventure with an engaging battle system, lovable characters, and an emotionally resonant narrative that sunk its claws in far deeper than expected”.

It is not surprising that Wings of Ruin is selling so well. The Monster Hunter series has always been a big hit for Capcom, selling over 72 million copies before Wings of Ruin hit the shelves. Of course, Monster Hunter Stories 2 is not the only entry in the Monster Hunter series to be released this year. Back in March, Monster Hunter Rise debuted to massive success, selling more than 6 million copies, proving the series is a popular one amongst players.

Capcom plans to build on this success with a slew of free updates for the game, including an upcoming one in August that will offer a Cooperative quest to battle the Kulve Taroth and two new monsters, the Hellblade Glavenus and Boltreaver Astalos. More updates are planned for September that will add even more monsters to the game.
