The final game reveal at The Game Awards 2023 was the sequel to Monster Hunter: World, as the series gets its first next gen only entry.

It was beginning to look dicey there for a moment, for Monster Hunter fans, as while earlier rumours suggested a follow-up to Monster Hunter: World was a shoo-in for The Game Awards there’d begun to be some concern that something had been lost in translation.

Thankfully, it seems Capcom’s not-so-subtle hints were exactly what they appeared to be, and Monster Hunter Wilds ended up as the final reveal of the show.

The new game won’t be out until 2025, and all that was shown was a short, possibly pre-rendered, trailer but it looked very impressive and the focus on weather effects and creature mounts seemed an interesting direction to take.

The trailer shows a very dangerous looking sandstorm, as well as lighting and rain that’s certain to make monster hunting more treacherous.

We thought it was two different mounts at first but on a second watch we released that it’s the same velociraptor-like creature throughout, that both runs along the ground and has wings to glide with.

You can also see a large dragon fly in at the end but whether that’s the big bad of the game or not isn’t clear.

This is the first time a Monster Hunter game has been released only for current gen consoles and PC and you can certainly see a major increase in graphical complexity.

That’s no surprise though, given what impressive work Capcom has been doing with the Resident Evil series lately.

Speaking of which, it was a good night overall for Capcom, who had Resident Evil 4 nominated in the Game of the Year category and saw Street Fighter 6 win Best Fighting Game and Resident Evil Village take home Best VR/AR Game.

Monster Hunter Wilds was the only new game they showed off though, with more information now not expected until summer 2024.
