Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle Of The Realms Clip Showcases Johnny Cage

Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms is an upcoming animated sequel that will follow the previously released Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge. A new clip was released that showcases a scene that's meant to be "humorous," with Johnny Cage using his quips to anger the warriors of Outworld. The film will tell the story of the second tournament following the plot of the first movie. The story will be doing its best to stay close to that of the video games, but it is also diverting from being canonically accurate.

In the clip, fans see Johnny Cage listening in as Kitana, Jade, Kintaro, Baraka, and Reiko are planning a retaliation attack. Once he's discovered, he drops down and instigates them to draw their swords out before diffusing the situation. The clip ends with a back and forth between Kitana and Johnny Cage where he promises to "let them live" despite the overwhelming odds against him.

In the Mortal Kombat game storyline, the main characters are the defenders of Earthrealm (Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, Jaxx Briggs, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Raiden), who won the 10th tournament against Shang Tsung, which prevents Outworld from invading. This prompts Shao Kahn to become impatient and use his Outworld forces to invade Earthrealm by breaking the rules. This is where the characters in the clip below were introduced. Mortal Kombat II introduced Kitana, Jade, Kintaro, and Baraka to the series just like this movie plans to do (these characters appeared in the previous film, but this time it looks like they want to give them the center stage).

Fans really liked the Scorpion's Revenge storyline and enjoyed the amount of violence present in the film, which fans were teased would return for the Mortal Kombat Legends sequel. The film did a good job at giving a unique take on Scorpion's origin and giving him the center stage as he increasingly becomes a more well-versed character. In the original series, Scorpion was often looked at as the angry ninja obsessed with revenge. However, in the recent entries, Netherealm has really fleshed out his character by making him more conflicted and on the side of good, rather than an evil specter always looking for someone to serve.

The recent live-action Mortal Kombat film also made Scorpion on the side of the protagonists, but the film wasn't met with the best reception from fans or critics. Many say the original live-action film was their favorite due to it not taking itself too seriously, but diehard fans are still anticipating a film that truly does the series justice. Here's hoping the animated route satisfies fans until they get their proper live-action release.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms will be available on August 31st, 2021.
