Netflix Reveals Cast Of The Live-Action Avatar Series

We now know who will be the stars in Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Actually, we knew the names a few days ago, but now we have some faces to go with them.

The all-important role of Avatar Aang will be played by Gordon Cormier, a 12-year-old Filipino-Canadian from Vancouver. Cormier's previous works include Lost in Space and The Stand on Paramount+.

Katara will be played by Kiawentiio Tarbell. A 14-year-old indigenous Canadian, Tarbell hails from the Mohawk Nation at Akwesasne in Eastern Ontario. She has previously worked with Netflix on a CBC show called Anne with an E.

Sokka will be played by Ian Ousley of unknown indigenous descent, and Zuko will be played by 10-year-old Chinese-Indonesian-American Dallas Liu, who's previously been on Hulu's PEN15 and has a role in the upcoming Marvel film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Along with the actors' headshots, Netflix also shared some thoughts from Avatar writer and showrunner Albert Kim who revealed that "authenticity" will be central to the show's story, characters, and cultural influences.

"This was a chance to showcase Asian and Indigenous characters as living, breathing people," said Kim. "Not just in a cartoon, but in a world that truly exists, very similar to the one we live in."

Similar, except that some people have the ability to control the elements using martial arts. Which is, y'know, cool.

Kim promised not to "change things for the sake of change," such as making Aang a "gritty antihero", but did say that the world of Avatar would grow in the live-action show, "and there will be surprises for existing fans and those new to the tale."

Avatar: The Last Airbender is rumored to begin filming in November, but Netflix has yet to offer confirmation and no release date has been set.
