New World Says Controller Support Isn’t Coming

According to Amazon, New World will not be implementing controller support in the future

As spotted by Can I Play That, a player by the name of Brian Torsey asked, "I use controller for most games because of issues with my neck that make me use my computer in a reclined position. I noticed they work for movement and basic things – I really hope they will work natively at launch."

"There is no controller support currently planned," New World's official Twitter account responded, "It will not fully support controllers at launch. However, all of the game's inputs are re-bindable and are compatibile with most accessibility control devices."

This is a complete shift to what New World stated five months ago. When pre-orders went live, it strained that controller support was planned for launch. Evidently, these plans have changed.

While the game is a PC exclusive, other MMOs such as Final Fantasy 14 and The Elder Scrolls Online have native controller support. All you have to do is plug your device in and you're ready to go. Others have also pointed out how all of New Worlds' inputs could easily be mapped to a controller – there are not too many for a gamepad. With Amazon delaying New World to respond to feedback from the closed beta, it's unsure why it has declined to take into account the request for controller support, especially given that it was originally intended to be included.

Controllers are not only handy if you prefer them to mouse and keyboard but they are an important aspect to making a game accessible to disabled players. Not to mention, mouse and keyboard exclusivity has fallen to the wayside in recent years. The new Mass Effect Legendary Edittion added controller support in a bid to modernize the game as the original PC port lacked it.

As New World continued to respond to a variety of people, one user simply replied, "Do better – accessibility is not an extra: it's a basic requirement."
