A list of Japan’s most popular video games ever shows how much the country loves the works of Nintendo and Square Enix.

Japanese television network TV Asahi recently aired a special broadcast to reveal the 100 most popular console video games in the country. More than 50,000 people voted for their all-time favourites and, judging by the results, Nintendo and Square Enix are the clear winners.

The results, which have been shared and translated by Gematsu, see Nintendo and Square Enix games dominate the entire list. The top 10 alone includes two Final Fantasy games, two Dragon Quest games, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

It was The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, however, that took the number one spot. Dragon Quest 5: Hand Of The Heavenly Bride and Final Fantasy 7 came second and third respectively.

What’s more, the Nintendo games within the top 10 are relatively recent, having all released for the Nintendo Switch. The one exception is Super Mario Bros. 3, which launched in 1988 in Japan (1991 in Europe) for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Nintendo’s first home console.

With so many Nintendo games on the list, Shigeru Miyamoto, the man responsible for creating multiple Nintendo franchises like Super Mario, The Legend Of Zelda, and Donkey Kong, shared a thank you message via the official Nintendo Twitter account.

“This is Miyamoto. Thank you for voting for so many Nintendo titles in the ‘Video Game General Election’ that aired last night. It was a chance to think back to all the scenes of game development over nearly 40 years. I will keep on making games to bring new experiences to all.” https://t.co/CnEoHyEZA8

While the list mostly consists of Japanese developed games, a handful of Western ones managed to make the cut. Indie darling Undertale came in at number 13, with Minecraft barely squeezing into the top 20.

Sucker Punch’s Ghost Of Tsushima also made the list, which makes sense considering its popularity in Japan earned its creators official tourism ambassadorships of the actual city of Tsushima.

However, it only came 66th overall, with Bloodborne, another PlayStation exclusive, coming right behind in 67th. Unfortunately for Microsoft, the list contains no Xbox exclusives.
