No Man’s Sky: How To Access First-Person Mode

A couple of years ago, Hello Games added the option to switch between first person and third person camera views. Despite No Man's Sky's disastrous launch, the developers have redeemed themselves with a wave of updates over the past few years. For example, in the initial version of the game, explorers were stuck in first person.

Hello Games listened to criticism from the community, and finally added the camera feature in the summer of 2018. The changes apply to camera view while operating vehicles as well. People can follow the simple steps below to see both in first and third person.

Updated on August 19, 2021 by Payton Lott: There has never been a better time to play No Man's Sky, as Hello Games have continued their efforts improve the user experience in 2021. The game has received several updates and quality of life fixes. Now, the New Frontiers update is just around the corner, giving players even more content to enjoy. With these new features, gamers will want to utilize the wide view of third person and switch to first person to take in all of the incredible views the universe has to offer.

Changing The Camera View

RPG games are traditionally third person games. Over the past several years, though, a lot of developers have created RPG/survival games in first person. First person in No Man's Sky is more immersive, but it limits the field of view of the player. Third person views provide more directional awareness and more real-time information to gamers. These steps let players change the camera view in No Man's Sky:

  • Press down on the D pad
  • Tab over to the utilities option (gear icon)
  • Scroll over to toggle camera view on the right

Benefits of Third Person View

While the third person view may not be as wide as it could be, it still provides a better view in game. Additionally, gamers will be able to see their character move around the universe. What is the point of traveling across solar systems and becoming a great figure in the galaxy if explorers are unable to flaunt their clout? When targets are pinged on the map, it is far easier to see them and navigate the landscape.

Players will want to be in third person the majority of the time they are exporing. The view just makes traveling the landscapes more intuitive, plus, it provides an RPG-like feel most gamers will appreciate. After all, No Man's Sky isn't a first person shooter.

Benefits of First Person View

Players will love the feeling of immersion in first person. No Man's Sky has an endless number of galaxies, systems, and planets to explore. Those using high end PCs or next gen consoles will be able to take advantage of all the new performance improvements as well. Explorers should take a second and marvel at all the amazing things the universe has to offer.

Third person mode will be the preferred view while collecting resources and completing objectives, but having the option of first person in No Man's Sky makes the experience of colonization just a little bit more satisfying.

Vehicle Camera View

To change the view while piloting a vehicle, follow the same steps as above, but select the "switch (insert vehicle name) view" option in the menu.

  • Press down on the D pad
  • Tab over to the utilities option (gear icon)
  • Scroll over to "switch (insert vehicle name) view"

Benefits Of Third Person View

A third person view helps immensely when fighting in the Starship. In first person, it is impossible to see ships above, below, or behind the Starship. It may look cooler in first person, but having a cockpit view during a space battle is difficult. When searching worlds, the wider view provides a much better picture of the planets and their elements. Likewise, it feels awesome to see all the upgrades and customizations while en route.

Benefits Of First Person View

With the few steps outlined above, gamers can choose to play the game how they want to. Toggling between both views is probably the best way to enjoy everything No Man's Sky has to offer. However, getting from point A to B will be more enjoyable inside of the cockpit. Every player will want to experience piloting a space ship with a first person view in No Man's Sky.
