Oculus Quest developer Gerald McAlister has recently found new evidence of a brand new feature coming to the platform called “Infinite Office,” which includes a “passthrough keyboard,” “guardian couch,” and more.

McAlister found files indicating that users may soon be able to mark their couch as being a part of their guardian, and even have it represented within VR by a 3D model. This would allow for users to use their couches while using their headsets, without having to remove their headsets. McAlister even found a video within the new v20 update of Quest’s system software, which gave a tutorial for users to trace the edges of their couch, in a similar manner of creating a Guardian boundary. The video suggests that this update may be close to release.

In addition, a 3D model of a whiteboard was also found by McAlister in the same update, which indicates that there may some sort of virtual whiteboard support via passthrough that is also on the way soon to the portable VR headset.

Last but not least, the “Passthrough Portal” feature that was added last month now appears to have gotten its name changed to “Passthrough Keyboard,” which is essentially a feature that allows the user to use their keyboard for work-related tasks while wearing their headset by recreating the keyboard in the virtual world by use of the Oculus Quest‘s passthrough cameras and Bluetooth connectivity.

It’s suggested that all of these things may be part of the new “Infinite Office” feature that’s currently being tested at Facebook internally, which could essentially allow for the Quest to create some sort of virtual office working space. This feature could allow for fully remote work capabilities, due to the Quest’s entirely wireless nature. With the virtual whiteboard, this could additionally open up new possibilities for remote classroom learning for teachers and students alike. It’s also possible that the new feature may also take advantage of the native hand-tracking update that was released earlier this year for the Quest.

It is still unknown as to when any of these new features will be officially released, or whether we can expect them to arrive at all. With a new Oculus Quest model arriving sometime in the near future, it’s entirely possible that this feature may be planned to coincide with the new model. Facebook Connect arrives on September 16, so it’s quite possible that details of these features may get touched upon in the upcoming event.

The Oculus Quest is available now.
