On the Road 96 Documentary Gives Fans a Peek Behind the Scenes of the Indie Hit’s Development Process

One of the biggest indie darlings of the year has to be Digixart’s hitchhiking narrative adventure, Road 96, and while it came out back in August, it’s likely to come up in conversations when Game of the Year talks roll around at the end of 2021.

Capitalizing on the positive buzz surrounding the project, the Montpellier-based indie studio has teased a behind the scenes documentary in a short, new clip. Go ahead and check out the new footage down below:

Clocking in at one minute and 48 seconds, the video gives fans a sneak peek into the development process of Road 96. Not only did the team face financial challenges, but they also had to contend with developing a game during a worldwide pandemic, too. Not an easy task, eh?

The full documentary, called On the Road 96, is available now on Steam and its release coincides with the title receiving a 20% sale on PC for those who’re yet to pull the trigger. Specifically, the documentary will set you back £1.96 (or your regional equivalent), while the game comes in at £13.56.

Our very own Chris Jecks reviewed Road 96 on PC and was really enamoured with the release ultimately awarding it a 4/5, concluding:

Road 96 is a special title well worth checking out for anyone with an itch for adventure. Its replayability may be limited, but for its budget price tag, this is one narrative-driven, decision-based adventure that almost completely delivers on its ambitious vision for the genre.

For more information about Road 96, here’s a rundown courtesy of an official press release we received today:

Road 96 is a procedural ever-evolving story-driven adventure game with survival elements in which players must escape a country ruled by an authoritarian regime that’s on the brink of collapse. Road 96 has an ever-evolving story that unveils more and more on each run to escape the country, inspired by road trip movies from the 90s from directors like Quentin Tarantino, The Coen Brothers and Bong Joon-ho. The game soundtrack features tracks from bands like Survive (Stranger Things).

Road 96 is available now on PC and Nintendo Switch.
