OWL VP Jon Spector Has Confirmed That Their ‘Plan Is to Begin Next Season in April 2022’
Overwatch League 2022 will officially begin in April next year, and it will reportedly compete on an early build of Overwatch 2. Jon Spector, the Vice President of the OWL, confirmed himself what the studio has planned for the game, following rumours that the franchise’s fifth season will end up being hindered by delays that are related to Overwatch 2.
“I have seen a lot of speculation regarding a 2022 start date for OWL,” Spector wrote on social media. “We can confirm that our plan is to begin next season in April 2022. We will share more details about 2022 roster construction timelines soon, and more info generally on our 2022 season as we get closer to April.”
“The plan right now is for the Overwatch League’s 2022 season to begin on an early build of Overwatch 2,” the devs revealed. “We will have more details to share about our 2022 season as we get closer to the planned start date in April of next year.”
It is worth noting that the PvP design changes applied to Overwatch 2 will be a big deal for competitive players and Overwatch League pros. Matches will be 5v5, instead of the regular 6v6. Plus, the teams will only get one tank—which reportedly made some tank players anxious when this new feature was announced.
At the moment, the Overwatch League is nearing the end of its fourth season. Post-season will reportedly begin on September 4th, while the Overwatch League Grand Finals will be held on September 25th—which, in turn, will mark the end of the current season.
Oddly enough, Spector did not mention anything about Overwatch 2 during all this. The upcoming installment remains to have no official release date attached to it. Previously, however, Blizzard did confirm that updates for the original game had “stagnated” primarily because of its shift of development resources toward the sequel. What Overwatch fans know is that the sequel will have only five players on each team, which could end up causing issues for some OWL players.
