Overwatch League Will Use Early Build of Overwatch 2 Next Seaon

Overwatch, Blizzard's newest IP released back in 2016, remains popular among many players for its fast-paced tactical action, gorgeous artstyle, and colorful characters. With a new map called Malevento on the horizon, there are still many reasons to play Overwatch today.

However, the popularity of Overwatch is no longer as high as in its heyday, in part because of the constant presence of Overwatch 2 on the horizon. Despite uncertainty about how many new things Overwatch 2 will actually bring to the table, players' hopes for the title are high, especially in the official Overwatch League. OWL players, as well as those who watch League play, now have a big reason to look forward to the season after this one.

The Overwatch League will begin its fifth season by playing an early build of Overwatch 2. While this year's season will be in Overwatch as is standard, the next one will use a build that will be, presumably, unavailable to players at that point. This will give them a huge reason to tune into the OWL during play time, as anyone interested in Overwatch at all will want to catch a glimpse of its sequel. Considering there are five year old bugs in Overwatch that still aren't fixed, many are hoping Overwatch 2 will be a bit of a reset button.

Foremost among those hoping for Overwatch 2 to stir things up in a big way are the players in the Overwatch League itself. These players are hoping that the new game will bring in more interest and keep it there, ensuring the Overwatch League remains a viable career path. Interestingly there was a scare recently that the Overwatch League would be delayed to coincide with Overwatch 2's release. It seems that a full delay will not happen, but the League will feature Overwatch 2 nonetheless.

There will, of course, be plenty of reasons to watch the Overwatch League this season too. Some of the best players in the game today compete at the highest level for big money. Impressive Overwatch plays are the norm and there's plenty to learn about the game.

Of course, it's currently unknown what changes from the original game the early build of Overwatch 2 will have, or how much it will throw the pros off their game. Changes in gameplay and appearance, to both the most beloved and most hated Overwatch characters, should be expected and, hopefully, turn out to be good.
