Pikmin AR Screenshots Appear Online

Niantic is reportedly still targeting a 2021 launch for its AR Pikmin game, and screenshots that have surfaced online seem to confirm that's a real possibility.

Mobile AR games continue to be big business, and Niantic is responsible for most of the genre's heaviest hitters. Its original AR game Ingress, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, and Niantic's biggest money-spinner of all, Pokemon Go. The success of Pokemon Go, in particular, has resulted in Nintendo committing to launch more AR games through Niantic featuring some of its most iconic characters.

While the deal will likely bring multiple Nintendo franchises to mobile, the next game getting the AR treatment from Niantic is Pikmin. Initially announced earlier this year, a Reddit post appears to have revealed what are the very first screenshots from the game. As you can see below, the still-unnamed Pikmin AR game looks a lot like Pokemon Go, as is to be expected.

While the screenshots are yet to be revealed via an official source, the original poster claims they come directly from Niantic. They certainly look legitimate and feature a lot of Pikmin-related content, as well as a few other nods to Nintendo. The Mii in the middle, for example. It makes sense that your avatar would look this way in Pikmin AR rather than the trainer design used in Pokemon Go.

A couple of the screenshots include captions explaining what exactly is going on in them. In the first picture, the player has been able to make the big flower bloom by planting around big sprouts. The second reveals that the reward for blooming a big flower is color nectar. That nectar can presumably be used to help your Pikmin move from their bud and leaf stages to their flower stage, as is the case in the main series of Pikmin games.

Despite a lack of official new information from Niantic and Nintendo, Pikmin's AR game is apparently still on track to be here before the end of 2021. The game was mentioned during a recent financial report alongside the slate of Switch titles already confirmed to be here by the end of the year. While Pikmin might not have the same size fan base as Pokemon, the concept for its AR game certainly makes it sound like it'll be another big earner for Niantic.
