PlayerUnknown To Create New Open-World Game With "Breakthrough" Neural Network Tech

PlayerUnknown has left PUBG. The Irish game maker made the announcement earlier this week following a move from Krafton to rebrand PUBG as PUBG: Battlegrounds. The name reflects the lack of PlayerUnknown in the game's continuing development while retaining the iconic "PUBG" moniker.

As for PlayerUnknown himself, he announced his own indie development studio and reintroduced us to Prologue, a project that was initially teased back in 2019. Today, PlayerUnknown took to Twitter to tell us more about Prologue and what he plans to be working on at PlayerUnknown Productions.

To put it simply, PlayerUnknown has his sights set on making the biggest open-world game we’ve ever seen. “That's our mission as a studio: we want to create realistic sandbox worlds on a scale that's seldom attempted. Worlds that are hundreds of km across with thousands of players interacting, exploring, and creating."

Making a game of the size PlayerUnkown describes would take years of development from a team of hundreds both to create such an enormous world and then fill it with stuff for players to do, but that's expensive and PlayerUnknown Productions is still a relatively small indie studio. Instead of growing to the size of Rockstar or Bethesda, PlayerUnknown revealed the existence of a breakthrough" new neural network technology that will be used to "generate massive realistic open worlds at runtime."

To demonstrate this technology, Prologue will be released not as a game but more of a simple tech demo. It will generate a wilderness at runtime and task the player with finding a way out using nothing but procedurally-generated supplies while under the constant threat of terrible weather.

We'll find out even more from an interview with VentureBeat which will release sometime tomorrow. In the meantime, PlayerUnknown asks aspiring game devs to check out his careers page to see if you might be a good fit for his "multi-year journey."
