The PlayStation 5 will reportedly have backwards compatibility with “99%” of PlayStation 4 titles and lack backwards compatibility with PlayStation 3 and older games.

According to an interview by Famitsu with Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan, the PlayStation 5 will only be backwards compatible with most PlayStation 4 games.

Famitsu: “In the story, I was surprised that PS4 titles are 99% compatible. By the way, is it compatible with PS1, PS2, and PS3 titles?”

Jim Ryan: “We have been building devices with a focus on PS5-specific engineering. Among them, PS4 already has 100 million players, so I thought that I would like to play PS4 titles on PS5 as well, so I introduced PS4 compatibility. While achieving that, we focused on incorporating high-speed SSDs and the new controller “DualSense” in parallel. So, unfortunately, compatibility with them has not been achieved.”

The PlayStation 5 is already only months away as previously reported. With only a handful of launch titles the lack of backwards compatibility for older titles will diminish the game’s library.

The PlayStation 5 will launch November 12th in the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. For the rest of the world, it will launch November 19th.

The PlayStation 5 will cost $499.99, while the Digital Edition will cost $399.99.
