Pokemon Go Anti-Cheat Accidentally Bans Innocent Players Yet Again

Last April, we found out that Pokemon Go's anti-cheat detection can sometimes go a little haywire. Over a dozen players were hit with a strike on Niantic's three-strike policy, resulting in seven-day or 30-day account bans for using unauthorized third-party applications.

Back then, players basically had to wait out the ban to get back to playing, but now another wave of false bans has players asking for help on The Silph Road subreddit.

There doesn't appear to be any particular pattern to the bans either. Some are reporting recent iOS updates might be behind Pokemon Go's anti-cheat falsely detecting third-party software, but others have reported no such updates. One even received a seven-day ban for using a remote raid pass, an option Niantic themselves released early last year due to the pandemic.

Eurogamer has "flagged the bans to Niantic" and received a response saying that the Pokemon Go developer is working to restore player accounts.

"We’re working on reverting strikes for some Trainers who incorrectly received punishments on their accounts," wrote Niantic. "This will be done for Trainers automatically, whether or not they have contacted us. We apologize for the error."

Besides April, Pokemon Go suffered a similar issue back in June of last year. Eurogamer reported "thousands" of accounts had received seven-day bans under Niantic's three-strike policy, with some users also reporting an iOS mismatch being the likely culprit.

No word from Niantic if players will be compensated for their false ban time.

In other Pokemon Go news, August's Community Day has just been announced and it once again features Eevee in the weekend's spotlight. Although Eevee remains one of the most popular Pokemon, some are wondering if Eevee is maybe a little bit too popular and stealing Community Day from lesser-known Pokemon that might benefit from having an increased shiny spawn rate.
