Pokémon Presents: Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet Announced for Nintendo Switch

The Pokémon Presents broadcast on February 27 ended with the surprise reveal of the 9th generation of new Pokémon titles: Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet.

According to the official site for the games, Scarlet and Violet will deviate from the typical format of previous Pokémon titles and will take place in an open world in which players can “explore freely.” Towns will “blend seamlessly into the wilderness with no borders,” and Pokémon will be seen flying in the sky, swimming in the ocean, walking in the streets, and exploring the forests.

This generation’s starter Pokémon have been revealed, as well:

  • Sprigatito
    • Type: Grass
    • Grass Cat Pokémon
    • Ability: Overgrow
    • The capricious, attention-seeking Grass Cat Pokémon
  • Fuecoco
    • Type: Fire
    • Fire Croc Pokémon
    • Ability: Blaze
    • The laid-back Fire Croc Pokémon that does things at its own pace
  • Quaxly
    • Type: Water
    • Duckling Pokémon
    • Ability: Torrent
    • The earnest and tidy Duckling Pokémon

The main characters of the games will wear a different-colored version of the same outfit depending on which version of the game you play (orange striped shorts and an orange tie for Scarlet, solid indigo shorts and an indigo tie for Violet). Naturally, because every region takes inspiration from real-world locations, people online got to studying the trailer and screenshots to figure out where this new region seems to be based on. The current popular theory is that it appears to be Spain or Portugal, leaning more heavily towards the former.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet launch for Nintendo Switch in late 2022.
