Nintendo's announcement that it's releasing a handheld console with an OLED screen got many thinking about the PS Vita which did the same thing years before.
Nintendo finally did it. It announced that the rumors are true and the Switch is about to get a second sibling. The OLED Model. Not more powerful than the regular console, but a system that boasts a bigger and better screen, a LAN cable port, a better stand, and twice as much memory for all your Switch games. Plus it comes in white which looks really cool.
More on that screen, though. While it might only be 0.8 inches wider than a normal Switch screen, that's still an improvement. Plus the OLED screen will also make a big difference to the way your Switch games look in action. However, the addition of an OLED screen to a handheld console got a lot of people thinking about a completely different system.

The PS Vita. PlayStation's second, and at this moment in time final, foray into the handheld console realm turns ten this year. However, despite being a whole decade older than the OLED Model, it had an OLED screen of its very own. So many people immediately had their memories jogged that shortly after Nintendo announced its new Switch, PS Vita started to trend on Twitter.

Most of the tweets are generic ones highlighting how the Vita paved the way for Nintendo. However, the best one we've seen so far might well be Nintendo Life's Jon Cartwright trying to cram his Vita into a Switch dock. Speaking of which, Nintendo has confirmed the OLED Model's dock will be available separately via its online store after the new Switch launches on October 8.
Nintendo will be hoping its OLED Switch enjoys more success than the PS Vita. The handheld console sold somewhere between 10 and 15 million units, making it the worst-performing PlayStation of all time. It still has its fans, though. So much so that a decision made by PlayStation to close the Vita's online store was reversed earlier this year following backlash.
