PS5 Almost Outsold All Other Consoles Combined In July

PS5s continue to sell like hot cakes in the UK, almost outselling all of its rivals combined last month.

Those of you who are still without a PS5 despite your best efforts are probably sick of hearing how well the console's sales are doing despite shortages. PlayStation understandably boasted that the console has already sold ten million units worldwide, making it the fastest-selling console in PlayStation history. Well, the records keep on coming, so if you are still waiting in virtual queues that feel like they stretch on for eternity, you might want to look away now.

GamesIndustry.biz's Christopher Dring revealed on Twitter that the PS5 had another bumper month in the UK in July. The console performed so well on the sales front that it almost sold as well as all of its rivals combined. Dring doesn't include exact numbers, nor does it mention which other consoles are included, but it's assumed the rivals are the Nintendo Switch and the Xbox Series X and Series S.

It isn't all doom and gloom for Xbox, though. The Series X|S is also the fastest-selling console for its creators. Xbox hasn't divulged how many consoles it has sold so far, but it will be hoping the Series X|S goes on to become the best-selling console in its history. It has a tall mountain to climb in order to do that as the 360 finished up on 84 million consoles sold.

Back to PlayStation, and Sony remains confident the ten million milestone will be the first of many record-breaking numbers the PS5 achieves before it is eventually replaced by what will presumably be called the PS6. The new-gen console hit ten million three weeks faster than the PS4, and the aim is for the new console to have the best year ever for a PlayStation in FY2023. That record has belonged to the PS1 since 1998.

The latest reports from Sony are good news for those of you without a PS5 that powered on through and kept on reading. The company has enough semiconductors to manufacture and sell 14.8 million PS5s during the current financial year. A target the company set for itself that will leave it on 22 million PS5s sold should it maage to achieve it.
