PS5 Reportedly Fastest Selling Console in US History, Switch is Still Best-Selling

Ps5 Switch April Npd Sales 04 17 21 1

The PS5 reportedly fastest selling console in US history while the Switch remains the best-selling console, a new report from market research firm NPD Group has confirmed.

The new report (via NPD Group) confirming PS5 reportedly fastest selling console in US history comes via the first five months of the console being available on the market, and includes both hardware units and dollar sales.

Previously, the PS5 had the record for dollar sales in the United States based on its four months available on the market, despite heavily constrictions on hardware availability and scalpers buying large quantities of units to mark up for resale.

To compare, the PS5 was the second best selling hardware platform in March behind the Nintendo Switch in both units sold and dollar sales, and the Nintendo Switch has been the best selling console in the United States for a record 28 consecutive months. The Switch even outsold next-gen consoles leading up to holiday 2020.

Total consumer spending with video game hardware, accessories, and content in March 2021 hit a record of $5.6 billion, and hardware sales came in at $680 million, beating the previous record of $552 million set in March 2008.

In software sales, Monster Hunter Rise was naturally high on the sales charts at number 2, trailing only Monster Hunter World in lifetime US sales with Capcom’s franchise. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War hit the top again as the best selling game in both the first quarter and the 12 months that ended in March 2021.

Mario Kart 8 was spotted at number 6 in March software sales, making it the best selling racing game in US history. Outriders came in at number three as the third best selling on both Xbox and PlayStation consoles. The fifth best selling game was Spider-Man Miles Morales, which managed to outsell both Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us Part 2.
