PSA: How to get Horizon Forbidden West cheaper on PS5

The biggest new PS5 game of the year so far is out on Friday but if you buy it on PS4 and use the free upgrade you can get it £10 cheaper.

Horizon Forbidden West is a great game, but the way Sony has handled the upgrade between the PlayStation 4 and 5 versions has… not been great.

Sony’s usual policy for cross-gen upgrades is that you have to pay £10, but there was an exception made for ‘launch window’ titles.

Originally that included Horizon Forbidden West and so when it got delayed to this month Sony was compelled to keep the free upgrade offer – only they’re not advertising that fact and many people are going to end up paying £10 extra for no reason.

Officially, the PlayStation 4 version of Horizon Forbidden West is £59.99 and the PlayStation 5 version is £69.99, so if you buy the PlayStation 4 version and upgrade you make your £10 saving.

However, as we’ve pointed out before, Sony does not draw attention to this fact and it’s impossible to buy the PlayStation 4 versions from an actual PlayStation 5 console. Even though you can buy it if you use the browser version of the PlayStation Store.

Alternatively, you could also just buy the PlayStation 4 disc version of the game, but either way there’s virtually no downside to taking advantage of the free upgrade to save yourself some money.

You won’t be able to pre-load the PlayStation 5 game if you buy the PlayStation 4 version, since the upgrade won’t be available till after launch, but that seems a pretty small inconvenience for saving that amount of money.

Of course, there is the question of whether the upgrade will actually work straight away, given the problems currently being experienced with Cyberpunk 2077, but that’s about the only downside.

As confusing as this situation is it’s unlikely to be repeated simply because Sony isn’t planning to offer any more free upgrades. Unlike Microsoft, after this everything will cost £10 to upgrade, no matter what game it is.
