Psychonauts VR Game Sees 90% Discount Ahead Of Psychonauts 2 Release

We are just over a week away from the release of Psychonauts 2, the long-awaited sequel to the 2005 classic. However, not too many people are aware that Psychonauts already had a sequel built specifically for VR.

It was called Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, and it takes place immediately following the events of the original Psychonauts. Raz is now a fully-fledged psychonaut and has embarked on his first official mission to save the Grand Head of the Psychonauts Truman Zanotto following a mysterious disappearance into the Rhombus of Ruin, "a mysterious part of the ocean as deadly as two Bermuda Triangles back to back!"

Raz, Lili, Sasha, Milla, and Coach Oleander all get trapped on the Rhombus and Raz has to use his psychic powers to rescue everyone. It's a bit more puzzle-based than the action-platforming you'd expect from the first game, but that's owing to the limitations of VR.

It’s also not particularly long–Double Fine was likely more concerned with devoting resources to Psychonauts 2 than tooling around in VR, but an hour-and-a-half teaser ahead of the full sequel’s release doesn’t sound like a bad idea.

Especially when it’s just $1.99 thanks to the massive 90% off sale currently on Steam. You can also get the original 2005 classic game for just $0.99, which is a pretty stellar price.

As for Psychonauts 2, the game went gold earlier this month and is now due out on Xbox, Steam, and Game Pass on August 25. That’s next Wednesday, in case you needed to set your calendars.

Double Fine head Time Schafer recently said he'd "love to" remake the original Psychonauts after the team has had a chance to decompress after finally getting Psychonauts 2 out the door. "A lot of source material doesn’t exist, such as the cutscenes and they’d have to be done from scratch," Shafer said. "The acting, lots of things hold up well. Someday we would love to.”
