Gamescom’s Opening Night Live stream brought about a ton of fun surprises and interesting goodies when it debuted yesterday, namely showing off more of 2020 and 2021’s biggest games. A Star Wars themed Sims 4 pack was unveiled, Black Ops Cold War details were shared, and fans even got their first look at Fall Guys Season 2.

Of course, the biggest game to make an appearance was likely the upcoming Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apartwhich received an extended look at the gameplay trailer first shown at Sony’s PlayStation 5 conference. The game looked astounding, boasting some jaw-dropping visual effects as well as a first look at the game’s dimension-hopping central mechanic.

Alongside the gameplay, it appears the game’s creative director Marcus Smith and lead designer Mike Daily had another intriguing tidbit to share about Ratchet and Clank when talking to Famitsu Magazine. During the interview, the pair were asked about the game’s resolution and frame rate, giving a particularly interesting answer. “One is 30FPS at 4K resolution and the other is lower resolution at 60FPS. You will be able to select either of these,” the translation of Famitsu’s article reads, confirming that both modes will be available depending on whether players are after visual fidelity or a smoother frame rate. With most console games locking both resolution and frame rate, it’s fantastic to see a next-generation game offering players more of a choice regarding how they want their experience to look and feel.

Seeing as there’s always been a huge debate over whether developers should prioritize a smooth frame rate or stunning visuals, it’s interesting to see Insomniac making steps towards putting the decision in the hands of the player rather than the developer. After all, it seems counterproductive to put such a subjective decision down to the development team, especially as providing the option to switch between a framerate or resolution focused setting means both parties can be appeased. Hopefully, it’s something more games will look to include as the next-generation approaches.

For those who didn’t catch the extended gameplay trailer yesterday, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart already appears to be running pretty smoothly and offering some extraordinary visuals while doing it. It’s easily the most ambitious game Insomniac has ever made, taking the crazy universes, characters, and weaponry of the Ratchet and Clank series and bringing them to PlayStation 4 is stunning 4K. Hopefully, it’ll be the best iteration of the landmark franchise yet when it ships in the near future.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is coming soon to the PlayStation 5.
