Insomniac Games’ Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart made an impact at Gamescom Opening Night Live. Not only did it showcase an uncut seven minute gameplay demo but confirmed that the platformer would launch around the PS5’s launch window. In a new interview with Famitsu, director Mike Daly also revealed that there would be two graphical modes on offer – 4K resolution at 30 frames per second and 60 frames at a “lower resolution.”
The option to play at 60 frames per second was further confirmed by the developer on Twitter. As Gematsu notes, Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia localization producer Daisuke Ishidate also spoke about these options. “Starting in the latter half of the PS3 era, we chose to make Ratchet & Clank games with beautiful graphics by doing away with the 60 frames per second of the PS2 era in favor of 30 frames, and the gameplay itself was built on the assumption of playing in 30 frames.
“This time, players will be able to choose between the 60 frames per second route of the PS2 era, or the higher resolution and 30 frames per second route of the PS3 era and onward.” What this “lower resolution” could be remains to be seen but it’s possible that Insomniac is still optimizing the same before officially confirming. Dare we hope for 1440p resolution at 60 frames per second?
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart may be releasing near the PS5’s launch window but neither it nor the console have a firm release date. Rumors indicate that the PS5 could be available in mid-November but stay tuned for any official announcements.
