Report: The frame rate for the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy titles is not great on PS5

Grand Theft Auto The Trilogy The Definitive Edition 1

When the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy was announced there was no mention of frame rates. “The Definitive Edition will feature across-the-board upgrades including graphical improvements and modern gameplay enhancements for all three titles, while still maintaining the classic look and feel of the originals,” said Rockstar.

It turns out that the three games in Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy will all have two modes, the usual Performance and Fidelity options. The first targets 60fps while the latter targets 30fps with better visuals. You will notice I have used the word “targets”, surely a game from 2001 can run at 60fps on a PS5?

Er, no.

It seems the frame rate in both modes on PS5 is not locked and wanders all over the shop. Grand Theft Auto 3 in Performance mode can drop as low as 35fps, even with the day one patch installed. Check out the video below.

Vice City and San Andreas seem to perform a little better but the frame rate still drops to the low 40s when there’s a lot going on in the game.

However, analysis of the Xbox Series X version of San Andreas seems to show it holding a rock steady 60fps in Performance mode and 30fps in Fidelity mode.

Twitter feed PlayStation Game Size recently revealed the file sizes for the three games with comparisons against the PS2 version that was released for PS4.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. (But only on Xbox)

Rockstar announced that Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition will launch digitally on November 11th. If you want a disc version of the games then you are going to have to wait a little longer until December 6th.

You’re also in luck if you subscribe to either Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Now. Game Pass subscribers will be able to play Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition from day one on November 11th, while PlayStation Now subscribers will get to play Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition from December 7th. No idea why there’s a wait for that, but there we go.
