Resident Evil Village Has Sold Over 4.5 Million Copies

Resident Evil Village was a critical hit when it launched back in May, achieving a wave of 8/10s in reviews, and scoring high with audiences too. Now, we know it was a commercial success on top of that, as Capcom reveals the latest entry in the horror series has shifted over 4.5 million units so far.

Despite COVID uncertainty, it’s been a good start to the year for Capcom. In its latest financial report, the company reports that this is the best first quarter on record, with both Resident Evil Village and Monster Hunter Rise playing a large role in this success.

Capcom’s report also notes that it’s been an uncertain few months. With a third state of emergency called in Japan, the company had to seize operations in some areas, and reduce working hours in others. Despite that, the success of the latest Resident Evil and Monster Hunter titles have not only kept the company going, but helped it break this profit record.

Resident Evil Village is catching up to its predecessor, Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, which has sold 8.5 million copies as of December 2020. Village may still have quite a bit of work to do, but it should be noted that it took Biohazard almost four years to reach that figure, whereas Village has only been in stores for a little short of three months.

As for Monster Hunter Rise, the report notes that it has seen growth in sales volume throughout the year, having launched in March. Despite only being available on Switch, the sales have been strong, having surpassed 5 million in a month.

It hasn’t all been positive news, however. Two weeks ago, Capcom announced an incredibly sudden delay for Resident Evil: Re:Verse – a multiplayer spinoff that was initially meant to launch alongside Village. Despite being just days for Re:Verse’s new launch date, it’s now been pushed back to an undecided date in 2022.
