It’s been a long run, but Rockstar is finally shutting down the GTA Online and Max Payne 3 servers on PS3 and Xbox 360.
The servers will go dark for PS3 and Xbox 360 players on December 16, 2021. Prior to the server’s end date, Shark Cash Cards will no longer be sold on those platforms after September 15. The shutdown does not impact the game’s Story Mode.
In a statement, Rockstar explains that the move is necessary “as we continue to move forward with updates and support for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC versions of Grand Theft Auto Online.” They also mention this fall’s launch of the next-gen enhanced versions of Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
In addition, “website stat tracking, online multiplayer, and leaderboards for the same versions of Max Payne 3 will also go offline on September 16.”
My Take
Both of these games are pretty old now – and the PS3 and Xbox 360 are even older. It’s actually somewhat surprising that they have lasted this long. Just goes to show their popularity.
