With only one day before the official and highly anticipated reveal of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, fans continue to scour the internet for any new details. Earlier this week, beta and pre-order bonuses seemingly leaked out, giving players a small glimpse at what they’ll be getting including early access as well as numerous cosmetic items. Thanks to another datamine, it seems Activision has already made up its mind regarding its plans for next-generation consoles.
Recently, dataminers in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare scoured the game’s files and managed to discover three different versions of the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. In addition to the standard edition, the files list an Ultimate Edition and a curiously named Cross-Gen Bundle. The three editions include beta access and give players a Frank Woods Bundle for Warzone and Modern Warfare.

For many, the surprising element to this leak is the Cross-Gen Bundle option, which strongly implies that Activision is going to be charging current generation players to upgrade Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War to the Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5. Unfortunately, there are no prices listed for any of these options though considering the upgrade option is listed as a bundle, perhaps Activision won’t be charging full price for those who have already picked up a copy of the game.
This revelation also seems to indicate that Activision is going against what most companies are planning for the next-generation console launches. Microsoft has been highlighting its Smart Delivery system for the Xbox Series X, which gives players the option to freely move their games to the next generation version free of charge. In addition to a good amount of third party games, Smart Delivery also includes Xbox first-party titles like Sea of Thieves, Gears 5, and more. While Sony isn’t guaranteeing anything quite like that, many third party companies have also come out to confirm their games will be getting free upgrades as well including Marvel’s Avengers and Cyberpunk 2077.
So far, one of the more high profile companies to not offer a free upgrade of its current-gen game is 505 Games. As the publisher of Remedy’s game Control, the company announced an Ultimate Edition version of the game, which would also include a free upgrade to next-gen systems. Unfortunately, this doesn’t include a way for current owners to upgrade, forcing them to purchase the Ultimate Edition in order to get access to the PS5 or Xbox Series X version. Naturally, fans were upset about this, though the publisher has not backed down from its stance.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is in development to release later this year.
