Grand Theft Auto III Remakes are in Development

Hot on the heels of a report that Rockstar Games is working on new remasters or re-releases, we’ve heard a new rumor that Grand Theft Auto III remakes are in development, for PC, consoles, and mobile.

The new rumor (via Kotaku) that that Grand Theft Auto III remakes are in development points to recently acquired Rockstar Dundee being the lead on the new remasters for Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas.

Originally the new remakes were set to be released alongside the current-gen ports for Grand Theft Auto V, on both Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 in November of this year. Then the remakes were reportedly moved up to early 2021, only to be pushed back again to late October or early November.

There have been fan attempts at “remastering” Grand Theft Auto 3 and its spinoffs, however the majority have gotten blocked by Take-Two proper, raising questions if they’re finally cooking up their own remaster.

According to their sources, the Grand Theft Auto III remakes are in development for Windows PC, Stadia, smartphones, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 – as well as the Nintendo Switch. The remakes are reportedly a mix of “new and old graphics”, remastered in Unreal Engine, but will retain the same classic look.

This would make the Grand Theft Auto III remakes the first release in the franchise on a Nintendo console since Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the Nintendo DS, which released way back in 2009, a year after Grand Theft Auto IV released for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.

Lastly, the rumor also notes Rockstar is looking to do new ports for the original Red Dead Redemption, however it didn’t go beyond that with details.

We’ll keep you guys posted.
