Rumor: The Last of Us Remake Being Developed for PS5

The Last of Us Remake Being Developed

A new rumor is pointing to The Last of Us remake being developed for PlayStation 5, by original developer Naughty Dog.

The new rumor (via Bloomberg) notes the remake is titled T1X, and was originally developed internally by Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Visual Arts Service Group, who normally help complete development on other games developed internally within Sony’s various developers – only the team wanted to become a lead developer later.

The team originally wanted to remake the original Uncharted game, but that was too expensive. A “remake” for The Last of Us wouldn’t be anywhere near as expensive as the game is more recent and was already remastered, so it wouldn’t require much extra effort.

While Visual Arts Service Group got stuck helping finish off The Last of Us Part II, its The Last of Us remake being developed for PS5 was intentional so they could bundle it with a PS5 version of its sequel. Eventually, Naughty Dog staff were sent to work on the T1X project, and that’s where things purportedly left off.

It makes sense that Sony would pursue a “remake” of The Last of Us, considering how much fans of the original hated what the leaks confirmed and then begged Sony to redo its story altogether. The game was so badly received by fans that Metacritic even implemented a 36-hour delay in user scores on the game after its release, in an effort to avoid users bombing its score.

Here’s a rundown on the original game:

20 years after a pandemic has radically changed known civilization, infected humans run wild and survivors are killing each other for food, weapons; whatever they can get their hands on. Joel, a violent survivor, is hired to smuggle a 14 year-old girl, Ellie, out of an oppressive military quarantine zone, but what starts as a small job soon transforms into a brutal journey across the U.S.
