Sakurai Has Considered Quitting The Gaming Industry

Masahiro Sakurai's commitment to the Super Smash Bros. series is unquestionable at this point. The longtime video game director has been working on the fighting game series since the first instalment in 1999, and is now working on DLC for the latest game, Smash Bros. Ultimate.

That's why, in the second part of his chat with Bandai Namco's Katsuhiro Harada, it's unsurprising to hear that it has taken its toll. As part of the talk that was uploaded yesterday, Sakurai admits that, "Making games is really tough. I can't count how many times I've thought that I want to quit"

Sakurai went further, discussing how he is often asked by fans what game he would "like" to make, but in reality: "there's no game I want to make… is what I'd like to say, but basically games are just more fun to play than make." From the sound of it, Sakurai's thoughts of quitting stem from the stressful nature of game development, as he says, "You have to think about competing with others because it is a competition. You have to fight and survive."

In more uplifting news, Sakurai also talked about another passion in his life outside of work: driving. For any car enthusiasts out there, he's currently driving a Mercedes S-Class, and has enjoyed going on drives throughout the pandemic.

Luckily for Sakurai, he's likely to have a whole lot more free time for driving soon. Recently, he re-confirmed that the next Smash Bros. character will be the last one. Going even further than his previous comments on the matter, his column in Famitsu read: "This is the end: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be complete”. Fans had been hoping for a third fighter pass announcement, considering the second was a complete surprise. However, Sakurai has done all he can to counter these rumours, so it looks like this truly is the end.
