If you’ve been playing Sea Of Thieves as of late, you’ve likely seen a giant, swirling red tornado appear in the sky. This is a World Event known as The Ashen Winds, which leads to a rather difficult boss fight with one of Captain Flameheart’s Ashen Lords.

However, this fight can be a very lucrative event that can net you a large amount of high-value loot. So if you’re looking to engage in some violence and make some gold, here’s our guide on how to tackle these red tornado bosses.
Look Our For The Red Tornado
When you see the red tornado, sail your ship over towards it and find the island it’s touched down upon. This typically tends to be one of the larger islands such as Wanderer’s Refuge or Kraken’s Fall.
Once you find the island, make sure you’re stocked up on food and search around the island for the nearest ammo crate. The Ashen Lords have some powerful attacks that can destroy you at close range, so using the Eye Of Reach rifle or Flintlock pistol to attack from a distance may be a good idea. If you happen to find a Trident Of Dark Tides, that can be incredibly useful in winning this fight as a fully charged attack can quickly bring down their HP. You could also park your ship close enough to the island to blast them with your cannons, but be careful since they can do heavy damage to your vessel.
At the center of the red tornado, you'll find one of Flameheart’s four Ashen Lords. This includes Warden Chi, Red Ruth, Captain Grimm, and Old Horatio. They all have different personalities, but their attack patterns and move sets are the same. If you’ve fought one of the Skeleton Lords before, this battle should be somewhat familiar. The major difference is that Ashen Lords have attacks that cause significant fire damage, so make sure you’re close to the water so you can douse yourself.

During the fight, they’ll have a variety of melee attacks that will knock you back. That’s why having a ranged weapon will make this fight a lot easier. They’ll also summon mobs of skeletons, throw rocks and fireballs, spew fire from their mouth, and create a smokescreen that will obscure your vision.
Ashen Lord boss fights have three stages. You’ll know a new stage is about to begin when they collapse to their knees. That’s a good opportunity to run up and start slashing them with your Cutlass until they’re back on their feet.
As you reach the second stage of the fight, they’ll gain a close-range shockwave attack where they'll pound the ground and send you flying into the air. This move causes both fire damage and fall damage as you land, so stay away from the boss and continue to use ranged attacks.
You’ll know you're at the final stage when they begin to perform their most deadly attack: raining down flaming boulders from the sky. This move can do tons of damage and even causes any nearby water source to boil. Try to find a spot on the island that can provide overhead cover until this attack ends.
Eventually, you should do enough damage to defeat them, and treasure should pop up all around the island. You’ll always receive an Ashen Winds Skull, which can be used as a flamethrower weapon or sold for a high price at an outpost to The Order Of Souls. There should also be a Chest Of Rage, which will explode unless you continually pour water on it. Along with those goodies, you should find a variety of Ashen treasure chests, artifacts, and high-value crates to sell to The Merchant's Alliance.
