Shang-Chi Featurette Offers New Details On The Marvel Hero’s Origins

Marvel Studios is moving full steam ahead with the promotion of its upcoming project Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Just a few days after releasing a new promo for the film, the studio has now shared a featurette that offers fans a look at the new character’s origins and the power of the Ten Rings.

The two-minute featurette consists of interviews with Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige along with some of the cast and crew of the upcoming film as they dive into the plot and behind-the-scenes action of Shang-Chi. It even offers a look at some never-before-seen footage from the film, increasing the hype for the already highly-anticipated movie that introduces the first Asian lead superhero into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The featurette connects Shang-Chi to the origins of the MCU. In 2008’s Iron Man, the Ten Rings were referenced for the first time and now, 13 years later, they are making a comeback in another MCU project. Feige talks about how Tony Stark was forced to build powerful weapons for the Ten Rings organization at that point and connects it with a “wonderful character” who Marvel really wanted to bring into the picture and relate to the organization someday. “That was Shang-Chi,” said Feige.

Simu Liu, who plays Shang-Chi in the film, confesses that he was very excited when he heard that Marvel was working on a project that included the hero. He even tweeted to the studio back in 2018 asking to discuss the role and is very glad he did that now that he will be seen portraying the titular character. Awkwafina, who will be seen portraying the role of Shang-Chi's best friend Katy, reveals how passionate Liu was about the character and said he is extremely “intense” in the film. “Shang-Chi was made for Simu,” she is heard saying in the featurette.

Both Liu and Feige go on to talk about Shang-Chi's backstory and his relationship with his father, who happens to be The Mandarin. Having to discover that his own father was an “evil overlord” makes his story unique and the team talked about how it would be interesting to see his interactions with a more “hardened father” upon his return into that crime world.

The featurette also confirms that the film will be loaded with action sequences, offering fans a glimpse of some of the battles that Shang-Chi will be partaking in. The most epic of them would be his fight against his own father, with the Ten Rings playing a major role.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will premiere in theaters on September 3, 2021.
