Shazam 2 Has Officially Finished Filming, New Set Photos Unveiled

The world is one step closer to its return to the Zachary Levi-led happy place known as Shazam!, and it's definitely something desperately needed right now. Of course, there's still a bit of a wait until the highly-anticipated sequel finally releases, but hey, maybe the theme of Shazam 2 will be patience. At the very least, it's definitely reached a milestone, and that's worth celebrating.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods, the sequel to 2019's surprise DC hit Shazam!, has finally reached the end of its often-delayed filming schedule. After COVID-19 complications prevented the movie from finally spinning up the cameras for quite some time, the production managed to power through when filming began earlier in 2021 and has now reached the end of that particular hurdle. Director David F. Sandberg decided to commemorate the occasion the classic way: on Instagram.

Following the long-awaited green light to begin filming in May 2021, the production seems to have made good time by completing that step in barely 3 months. Looks like making Levi's new suit didn't take up too much time. The unfortunate bit is that Shazam! Fury of the Gods is still quite a ways away from its projected release date (and there's still the chance for reshoots to happen during the extended post-production period), but that doesn't mean this isn't still a cause for just a touch of jubilation. After occasionally posting Shazam! Easter eggs during production, Sandberg even made the traditional "that's a wrap" announcement via Twitter, seemingly reassuring everybody that it's all going as it should. But his Instagram post was a bit more interesting.

The post depicts what looks to be a perfectly pleasant bedroom destroyed by, presumably, some superpowered shenanigans. How very rude of those godlike hooligans to declare war on comfort like that. Maybe that's a hint that Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam actually will make a cameo. Sandberg's caption was also a bit cheeky, saying "That’s a wrap! Now sleep…" Shazam! as a franchise already seems to have a penchant for newbie heroes accidentally making a mess of things, so maybe this is as perfect an announcement as there could be.

2019's Shazam! surprised audiences with its heartfelt (yet still lighthearted) take on the superhero genre. Amid all the dark and gritty vibes of the DC Extended Universe as a whole, this film stood out as a wholesome story about found family and how any kid would definitely act if they suddenly got superpowers. The sequel seems to be up for expanding on those themes even more, especially with a possibly Incredibles-esque focus on a whole family of superheroes rather than just the one guy like last time.

Once again, there's still a lot of time to go before Shazam! Fury of the Gods premieres, so that should give eager fans plenty of time to catch up on the story by watching the first one again. There are plenty of aspects from the first Shazam movie that are sure to come back again, so brush up and get comfy, cause it's going to be a bit of a ride.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is currently set to release on June 2, 2023.
