Silent Hill creator talks remake – implies it’s not happening

The director of the original Silent Hill doesn’t seem to know anything about a remake, despite years of rumours and supposed leaks.

Video game developers are generally not very good at keeping secrets, with most well-sourced rumours usually being proven true fairly quickly; the exception to that rule is a remake of Silent Hill.

Rumours of a revamped Silent Hill, implied to be something in the vein of the Resident Evil remakes, have been going on for years now, but nothing has ever been announced, despite multiple different sources seeming to be adamant that it’s imminent.

That’s usually a sign that a project has been cancelled but a new interview with original director Keiichiro Toyama implies he doesn’t know anything about a remake – even though he thinks it’d be a good idea.

While speaking about his new game Slitterhead to VGC – one of several different sources for the original rumours – Toyama was asked about the possibility of a remake and said, ‘I think it would be harder to remake than Resident Evil, because the gameplay as a concept is a little older’.

‘It’s not an action game where you can just refine the action as in Resident Evil. To bring Silent Hill up to current standards or to polish up the graphics, the fans wouldn’t be satisfied’, he added. ‘That’s not what it was about – how beautiful it was. I think you’d have to rethink the concept to make it interesting to fans’.

Unless Toyama is really good at bluffing the impression he gives is that he knows nothing about a remake and while it’s unlikely he’d be directly involved, since he now runs his own studio, it’s hard to imagine he wouldn’t have been contacted about it.

That doesn’t mean the rumours weren’t true at the time they originally surfaced but as of right now it doesn’t seem to be happening.

Toyama isn’t against the idea of a remake, admitting that older games can be difficult to appreciate as they get older. Which is especially true of Silent Hill, which was technically unimpressive even at the time of its original release over 20 years ago.

He didn’t say anything about the prospect of a reboot though, which is also something that’s been heavily rumoured – with talk of everyone from Hideo Kojima to Bloober Team being involved.
