Six-Year-Long GTA Underground Project Shuts Down Over "Increasing Hostility" From Take-Two

Unfortunately, we must pile on more news about Take-Two Interactive’s conquest of GTA mods. In this particular instance, Take-Two Interactive has not actually gone after these modders yet, but they want to shut down before that happens, in light of how the company has been going after others.

The lead developer of GTA Underground, which is a mod that has been worked on for six years for San Andreas, has just announced that all development has ceased and that the project has now gone offline. GTA Underground has been one of the most popular and impressive mods for GTA so far.

The lead developer released the following statement about the situation on GTAforums.com:

Due to the increasing hostility towards the modding community and imminent danger to our mental and financial well-being, We sadly announce that we are officially ceasing the development of GTA: Underground and will be shortly taking all official uploads offline. We would like to thank the community for the immense support they've given us for the past years and our talented modding team for the incredible work, dedication and great times we had together.

The developer added that, despite the mod getting shut down, it’s possible that the members of the GTA Underground team are going to work on releasing an original game now instead, though this has not yet been confirmed.

Take-Two seems to be on a rampage lately, as it was only yesterday that we’ve reported on Take-Two’s suing of a different group of developers. This group had reverse-engineered the source code from Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City, and they included ports of the games for the Switch, Wii U, and Vita. Take-Two claimed that this group has caused “irreparable harm” to the company.

Considering Take-Two is targeting mods of older GTA games, it’s likely that the rumored remasters are going to be coming soon, and that’s what has been motivating Take-Two’s witch hunt. Despite that potential silver lining, we still feel for the modders who are losing or giving up on years of work.
