Skyrim Mod Finally Makes Third-Person Usable

The Elder Scrolls has an iffy track record when it comes to third-person cameras. Using it in Morrowind is ill-advised and Oblivion will give you a searing headache. Skyrim's was a bit better but still not up to scratch with its third-person cohorts. However, at long last, a mod has stormed onto the scene to rectify that.

As spotted by Eurogamer, there's a new entry onto Nexus Mods called "True Directional Movement – Modernised Third Person Gameplay." With it installed, you can move and attack from any direction with a target lock much like the one from The Witcher 3 and Dark Souls. It even adds a health bar to enemies and a large boss bar for the tougher foes like dragons.

A video showcasing this in action seems a lot more modern, akin to those aforementioned RPGs. Many collections of mods have attempted to do the same but still with that awkward third-person Skyrim jank from 2011 – this seems different in that regard. You can see it in action below.

It even overhauls how spells work with two options – "Predictive aim" and "Homing projectiles." Predictive is a bit fairer as it will calculate the target's velocity and aim your spell at where it expects them to be. Usually, it'll hit. However, if they suddenly change trajectory, it'll miss. Otherwise, Homing projectiles does what it says on the tin. You'll always land your hits.

The mod even adds head tracking. There are already addons for this but it means that you can trim down your number of installed mods to save up space. What it does, for context, is ensure that player's head turns toward the NPC that is speaking rather than blankly staring off right in front of them into a wall, a shoulder, or the vast open fields of Skyrim's wilderness. You won't look like you've hit your head a few too many times in combat, now.

Already, it has 16,000 downloads and 1,400 endorsements. However, you can't use it on the original Skyrim – this one is Special Edition only.
