When it comes to slow progress, dungeons have always been known to be a tough nut to crack. If you've ever been stuck in the legendary Water Temple in Ocarina of Time, then you know what I mean here. In this guide, we're breaking down Skyward Sword's very first dungeon, the Skyview Temple, so you'll know exactly how to make your way through it easily. This leads off from our Faron Woods walkthrough, so check here if you don't know how to get inside the Skyview Temple yet.

Entering The Main Chamber, Skyview Temple – Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

As you enter the dungeon you'll find yourself on a circular staircase. Begin by heading down, beating enemies, and slashing through trees and webs. At the bottom the door will be locked – slash the trees against the wall to uncover vines. There's a plant enemy at the top – stun it before climbing and hitting the switch to open the door.

In the next room, stand on the centre platform and face the eye above the locked door opposite. Draw your sword and rotate it in circles in the air. The eye will follow, get dizzy, and then unlock the door.

Finding The First Small Key, Skyview Temple – Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

All of the doors in the main chamber are locked. Walk to the crossroads in the path, and then turn right – shoot the switch above the door with your Slingshot to unlock it. Inside, cut your way through the web and fight the Skulltula spider – you can hit it left or right to rotate it, and then jab at the weakpoint behind its bum. The sign here will give you a hint. Return to the previous chamber.

The locked door opposite in the main chamber also has a switch to unlock it, but you need to jump underneath the walkway to find it. Shoot the switch, and go into the next room. There are two Skulltulas blocking the way, but you can get around them by heading to the right side of the room and shooting down two curled vines that can help you get across. You can easily kill the Skulltulas from behind by jabbing them in order to clear the path.

Go up the stairs on the other side of the room and through the door. Walk along the truck of the tree to unlock the chest, which holds the Dungeon Map, which will allow you to see all of the dungeon's chests and rooms. Using this map will reveal two additional rooms we've walked past. Go back into the previous room and stand between where the two Skulltula webs are. Look to the far wall again, and you'll see a switch to shoot, which will raise the water level.

Now go into the previous room again where you fought your first Skulltula. Drop down to the bottom, and on the left wall you'll find a crawlspace. You will see a switch to shoot. Do so, and the water will raise again, allowing you to climb some vines and escape through another crawlspace.

Return to the main chamber. With the water level now raised, two logs have been lifted and will give you access to new areas, the first of which is directly left of the door you will enter into the main chamber from. Walk across the log, shoot the enemies, and climb the vines to get up and enter the door.

There's another Skulltula to beat in this room, once done, stand in the centre of the room and face the two eyes guarding a chest. You'll need both of them to be looking at you, and then you'll need to once again rotate your sword in a circular motion to defeat them and open the gate. The chest contains the Small Key you need to make your way into the next room. Return to the main chamber and exit through the locked door using your Small Key.

Getting The Beetle, Skyview Temple – Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

Now we're in another large room. Immediately ahead of you in a locked door in a centre chamber, and you can shoot the switch above the door to get inside – nice and easy. Inside you'll have to deal with a Stalfos fight – Stalfos in this game defend at least two directions, and you'll need to slash in the direction so you can hit them directly, and not their blade. You can shield parry for counterattacks if you're able to see them coming, and with some perseverance, you can take him down.

Once the Stalfos is down, you can open the chest containing the Beetle. This item will need to be upgraded several times yet, but for now it's a great addition to your arsenal. You'll find the door you used to enter is locked – there's a hole in the ceiling above, and you can send the Beetle out and around the front to hit the switch above the entrance once again. This also demonstrates that you can cut through webs and vines with the Beetle, which will be very useful.

Quick tip: there's a Piece of Heart inside the centre pillar, and the gate to it can be opened by hitting the Switch on top of the centre room with the Beetle.

Getting The Second Small Key, Skyview Temple – Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

Back into the big circular room, go to the left side – we'll be going through this door, once we unlock it. Now that you have the Beetle there are dozens of locations you can visit with it – feel free to cut down boxes and explore passages. There is a passage above this locked door, and inside is a switch to open it. Head inside and walk straight through to the end, entering through the next door. There's a Skulltula in here to fight. Slash upwards to flip it over, and then use your finishing move to end the fight. Now to get the gate guarding the chest open.

Climb the vines on the wall next to the entrance, and then use the Beetle to cut the box down. Push this box down onto the lower floor, and then into the centre of the room, facing the gate. Climb on top, and if you have the location right, you should have all three eyes surrounding the gate facing you. Rotate your sword as before, and you'll get the chest containing the Small Key.

Exit through the last room, and immediately use your Beetle. Go upwards onto the upper level, navigate past the Skulltula, and hit the switch at the back of the room. This will raise the water level, allowing you to get up. Swim up, slash through the web, and cut the trees at the back of the room to uncover a crawlspace you can use to get back to the door. Now we're back in the last circular room, with a Small Key.

Finding The Boss Room And Key, Skyview Temple – Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

Head to the right side of the large circular room to find a tightrope to walk across, surrounded by plant enemies. You can destroy these plants by cutting their stems with the Beetle, clearing the path. Open the door with the Small Key and make your way through. Slash your way through the wooden boards up ahead, and then you'll need to slash all three of the next enemy's heads at once in order to defeat it. Just wait until they line up just right.

Make your way through the door that open up, and continue through, defeating enemies on the way. Cut the web of the Skulltula on the way, and jump across the gap. Then you'll find yourself on the other side of the locked door in the circular room – shoot the switch above it to open up the shortcut.

You'll need to use the tightrope in the centre of the room – tempt the Bokoblin over, and then shoot him to knock him into the void. Here's you'll find the boss door – time to get the key. Head to the right and climb the vines. Up here, slash the rope to cut it, and then jump on to start swinging. Don't jump immediately, make it face to the right a bit, and climb the tree near the vines.

Carefully walk across the tree trunks, and shoot the curled vines down on the two trees ahead – you'll need to use these to swing over into a room on your left. This room contains the boss key. Open the chest up, climb the vines to escape, and then cross the tightrope once more to get to the boss room, just rotate the key to match it up with the slot and then press A. Get ready for a good fight – Demon Lord Ghirahim – who we have a guide for right here.
