Smite Reveals Next Playable Character, Charybdis

Hi-Rez Studios has revealed Charybdis, the next playable Godlike character coming to Smite this August. Charybdis has been cursed by the gods, trapped underwater for centuries, and is basically the embodiment of thalassophobia — the fear of the sea.

“There once was a girl born from the depths of the sea,” the reveal trailer says, presenting a legend about Charybdis' origin. In the creators’ vision, this goddess was always planned to be a Physical Hunter. As such, in the game Charybdis would be a child, the daughter of Poseidon, and a sportswoman, wielding physical powers. She also has a single large-mouthed monster in place of her left arm, hidden underneath a royal cloak.

Smite’s new champion has a wide range of fighting skills, like a charge-up strike with a wide attack radius, or the ability to temporarily transform into a giant whirlpool. Charybdis will join the Battleground of the Gods in August. The full reveal is scheduled for this Wednesday at 3pm ET during the Update Show. Some fans have already shared their concerns that the upcoming Charybdis looks pretty much the same as Scylla, whereas according to the myths it is meant to be the polar opposite.

The developers said they heavily considered all of the different options for Charybdis depiction, yet they wanted to stay true to the idea of Scylla and Charybdis as a strong duo, symbolically designed as sisters. The team assured the characters would be opposite in many ways except for the base visual direction.

Even if you’re not interested in the upcoming newcomer for various reasons, there are already more than 100 playable Gods in Smite for any taste. With over 35 million players registered in this free-to-play MOBA since its original launch back in 2014, now is a good time to join the fight.
