Sonic Rule 34 Has Taken Over Trump Twitter Clone, GETTR

The intended audience of GETTR are probably a confused bunch right now. Created by Donald Trump’s former campaign team, GETTR is billed as an alternative to sites such as Twitter. But just days after its launch, it’s attracting a very different crowd.

GETTR has been hit by a campaign of gaming-related memes, discussion…and a lot of NSFW content. In regards to the latter, Sonic posts by far take the lead, with rule 34 images of the blue blur and friends shared liberally in unrelated hashtags and in the replies of popular accounts.

As first spotted by Kotaku, some of the most popular hashtags include #sonicismylove, #soniclovescommunism, #sonicfeet, #sonicinflation, and many more that I can’t publish. The site's admins appear to be aware of this unexpected audience, as searching for hashtags and users has now been disabled.

Unsurprisingly, some of the prominent Sonic rule 34 posters claim that their posts are getting removed, and their ability to comment is being revoked. However, at the time of writing there isn’t actually a terms of service, so in a sense, there are no rules to breach.

But it isn’t just Sonic porn. GETTR has also become a hub of gaming discussion, usually in a way to derail unrelated political hashtags. Genshin Impact fans are using the app to share fan art, memes, and argue over their favourite characters.

The only thing close to any official acknowledgement of the overwhelming trolling campaign is a post from the site’s support team. In a statement, they explain, “currently, our system is experiencing a delay due to an unusual amount of online users’ registration activity”. The last post from this account was two days ago.

Despite being set up by his most ardent allies, the ex-president himself is yet to actually join the site. It’s unclear what politicians have actually signed up, as unsurprisingly, many of the meme accounts were quick to scoop up their usernames. At least I’m guessing it isn’t really Ted Cruz talking about his love of eating bugs and looking at Sonic smut.
