Sony Plans PlayStation PC Ports After Nixxes Purchase

Sony is angling to get more into the PC gaming market. SIE CEO Jim Ryan made that clear earlier this year after the launch of Days Gone, saying that it would signal a "whole slate" of PlayStation PC ports.

Since then there have been rumors of PC ports, but nothing confirmed. We might be getting a Ghost of Tsushima port, we might not be getting a Bloodborne port, or we might get something entirely different.

The only sure thing we have to go on is Sony's recent purchase of Nixxes, a Dutch studio that primarily focuses on PC ports. Nixxes was responsible for the Tomb Raider games getting ported to PC along with the Deus Ex series, and have even helped out Crystal Dynamics on the Operation Hawkeye expansion for Marvel's Avengers.

At the time, Sony said that the purchase was to "create unique PlayStation content at the best possible quality," but you don't buy a PC porting studio unless you plan on making some PC ports. Now, thanks to an interview between CEO Jim Ryan and Famitsu, we've got confirmation.

"We plan to further develop our game development capabilities and develop more exclusive titles for PlayStation owners to enjoy, the results of which you'll see in the coming years," Ryan told Famitsu. "We are also happy with our efforts to provide our IP to PCs, although it is still in its infancy, and we look forward to working with Nixxes to help with that."

Elsewhere in the interview, Ryan addressed the ongoing chip shortage and how that’s led to supply issues with the PS5. "Gamers know that it's still difficult to get a PS5, and I'm very sorry about that. The biggest thing we can do to improve the situation is to increase supply. We are working very hard on this with our partners.”

Sony expects the supply shortages to last well into 2022. But even with supply problems, Sony still managed to sell 10 million PS5, putting it on track to become the best-selling PlayStation ever made.
