SpellForce 3 Dev Is Hiring For A New Top-Down ARPG Project Minerva

Grimlore Games, the studio behind SpellForce 3, has started working on a new game under the codename Project Minerva. The team is hiring for what appears to be a premium top-down action-RPG title for PC and consoles.

Being a part of THQ Nordic and Embracer Group (which continues to purchase gaming studios at warp speed), Grimlore Games was founded in 2013 and is primarily known for its fantasy game SpellForce 3. The developers are also responsible for SpellForce 3’s various expansions, including Soul Harvest and Fallen God, which combines real-time strategy elements with role-playing mechanics. After working on the SpellForce universe for more than seven years, the Munich-based developer is finally ready to move on to the next project, formally revealed on the studio’s official website.

The team confirmed it is now fully involved in the new Project Minerva title, supported by the German Games Fund. The upcoming game is being described as a “top-down ARPG set in an antique, picturesque, handcrafted open-world,” and will be pretty ambitious by the sound of it. As it stands, the devs are about to keep their traditional top-down perspective but want to explore the new antique setting with a focus on story narrative, dialogues, and role-playing elements.

Another brief information we currently possess is that Project Minerva will be a game for a “hardcore gaming audience,” and will be a “premium core RPG for PC and consoles.” Its first concept-art reveals an antique statue of presumably Athena Pallas, judging by her spear and helmet, as well as an owl on her shoulder. She was an ancient Greek goddess of wisdom and warfare and later was syncretized with the Roman goddess Minerva.

There are about 40 developers working on Project Minerva right now, and the team is looking to expand for the upcoming title. Grimlore Games needs technical animators, writers, programmers, level designers, and more. According to the recent job openings, Project Minerva will use Unreal Engine at its core.

There is currently no ETA for Project Minerva, as well as its target platforms. Considering the project is at the early stages of development, the game most likely will skip the last-gen consoles, and will arrive on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S in a few years.
